I have worked under a Catholic Bishop for four years now. Dave and I went to Italy on our honeymoon in 2011 and then in 2013 we took an Italian Pilgrimage with Bishop Sheridan taking almost the same route as before – Rome, Orvieto/Tuscany, Florence. My extensive study and practice of religion and spiritual subjects has lead me to this radical conclusion: it makes no difference if you are religious or spiritual…the Law of Attraction is working in your life whether you are aware of it or not. How is this so?
Law of Attraction (LOA) is simply that like attracts like. It is a law of nature just like gravity. As Charles Haanel states in his book, The Master Key System, “The vibrations of mental forces are the finest and consequently the most powerful in existence.” Our thoughts are energy, magnetic and have a frequency. The essence of what you send out into the Universe, comes back to you.
Regardless of whether you are into the metaphysical or practice a particular dogma, if you cross the street without being mindful of your physical surroundings and just go without looking for oncoming traffic, chances are you could get hit by a car. You are a spiritual being having a human experience. We must navigate both the spiritual and physical world at the same time. If you try and use a lamp that doesn’t work, praying all day long isn’t going to help – you need to replace the burnt light bulb! This is why I see no conflict with the Law of Attraction and religion. You can practice a particular belief while at the same time using the natural laws of the Universe to bring good things to you.
People are always confused as to why some people seem to have a better life than others. It’s because of the thoughts and images they are holding in their mind – do they tend to lean towards a knowing of abundance and a can-do attitude, or is the world bleak and their attitude negative? I can look back on my own four decades of living and see a pattern, a pattern that was evident when I was Catholic growing up and a pattern that was evident when I was just focused on the spiritual side of my beliefs. The reason that my desires came to me whether I was focused on Catholicism or just an energy presence, is because I was intently focused on what I wanted at the time and I didn’t pay attention to barriers. I always had a clear image in my mind of the result I was seeking and I would ask for help from up above. The result was always the same. If I prayed to an omnipresent entity (sometimes I called it God, Universe or Source) and then I took action steps towards what I wanted, I was always helped in achieving my desire even when I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplish it. One of the keys was that I acknowledged a co-creator in my life. I knew that I didn’t accomplish my dreams alone.
You do not need to fall into either camp (religious or spiritual) exclusively in order to mold yourself to the laws of the physical world to have a better life experience. I outline the three steps to implementing LOA in your life: Appreciation and Gratitude, Mastering Your Thoughts and Feelings, and Ask, Believe, Receive. Everything – people, thoughts and things – are energy and the dictionary defines energy as a spiritual force. The metaphysical Universe is simply mirroring back to you what you are thinking, saying, feeling and doing.
Appreciation and gratitude elevates your energy and therefore you emit a more positive frequency. That’s why it’s the first step with the Law of Attraction. What you think about, you bring to you, so you need to send out a ‘higher’ emotion (joy, optimism, freedom, love, passion, contentment, etc.) so that you can attract good to you. The Bible talks about this, too:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:6-8
Mastering your thoughts and feelings is imperative if you want to keep what you want flowing into your life and keep those things you don’t want out of your life. Keep your mind and your language on your desires. Don’t say, “I don’t want any more debt.” Because what will your emotion be with that thought? Negative, right? The picture in your mind is debt and that’s what your Source responds to, thinking you want more debt! Instead, say, “I’m so grateful that I have extra money in my checking account.” See the difference? That statement puts a smile on your face and generates a more positive emotion. Thoughts act like a boomerang in your life.
Napolean Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, writes, “Throughout this philosophy will be found the suggestion that thought, backed by strong desire, has a tendency to transmute itself into its physical equivalent.” Send your thoughts and words into the direction you want your life to go. You cannot speak lack and expect abundance to come to you. Since we have so many thoughts during a given day, depend on your emotions to let you know if you are acting out of love or fear on any particular subject or during any part of your day. Scripture gives us guidance here, too:
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. Psalm 139:4
Ask, Believe and Receive is my favorite step. It’s simple yet people have the hardest time with it and mostly because of not feeling worthy. In my workshops and personal conversations with people from all backgrounds and status, people get hung up on what they have done or haven’t done or what other people might have told them about their personal worth. The Universe is impartial – you have seen this with your own eyes – sometimes those that seem more ‘worthy’ have a harder life and fewer resources and other times you come across people you don’t like that have it all. What gives? It’s because that person, sometimes not intentionally, is sending out a personal ‘signal’ that is bringing to them what they want or bringing to them what they don’t want.
Even in the Bible it tells us that we cannot earn our way to heaven…that we are to aim to be more Christ-like because it is the right thing to do. Every person must decide if they want to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior but when it comes to the Law of Attraction, it is evident that you are to adhere to the principles of the physical world and have faith in an Omnipresent Source. That’s why you questioning your worthiness is pointless – you are a patented being, so unique and gifted – your Source deems you worthy of good things in life. Scripture says this:
“Whatsoever ye shall ask for in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22
What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”
And Jesus said to him, “If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes. Mark 9:23
As pastor Joel Osteen writes in his book, Think Better, Live Better, “The Scripture tells us to guard our mind. You control the doorway to what you allow in. You can dwell on every negative though and every derogatory comment, or you can choose to delete it and dwell on what God says about you…you are the head not the tail…you are a victor and not a victim…you have seeds of greatness.”
A gift you can give yourself is to relax about manifestation and use the Law of Attraction with as light and grateful of heart as you can.
